Last Sunday

June 28, 2007

Man, life has just been jam packed with my new job. I am up at 4AM every day. And for those who don’t know me that well… I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON. The trade off is that I am home much earlier in the day, but we have had a lot of family things, church meetings and evening work that I haven’t been able to post when I wanted to!

So I’m on lunch right now – and posting!

Last week was great! Our Power Point was, “I Can Worship God!” and our Memory Verse was, “…You must worship The Lord your God and serve Him only – Luke 4:8″. We did three songs instead of just one. The kids really seemed to enjoy that. In fact, I think we will try to do two songs regularaly going forward.

I was also very pleased to see people who had expressed interest in serving the kids come and talk to Patti and I. We hope to be announcing some additional workers really soon!

On a curriculum front… Well. I have called the company we ordered from every day for a week and I keep getting the run around. I am just about ready to call the local problem solvers on our local news station! Look for another LeGrand written message this week!

Well… Lunch is over. Back to work!

After Midnight…

June 23, 2007

OK, so it’s late… But no where near as late as it has been getting ready for Sunday’s thus far. I’ve got all the hard work done. All I have to do now is copy my Power Point presentation to my laptop and I can go to bed for the night!

Of course I have to get up around 5AM <Uuuugh> but it will be easier with a bit more sleep than in recent weeks!

This Pastor stuff is hard!

Getting Ready

June 23, 2007

Well, it looks like our curriculum that is on order is never going to ship – LITERALLY! I now have to try to find an alternate then cancel / re-order. Aaaargh! This is a bit frustrating, but I think it will be worth it in the end.

I am not doing a Today’s Life Story this week. The main service is focusing on worship, so we are going to do our own version and include a lot of music in our lesson this week. The kids seem to really like that anyway, so it should give me (And my artist Raina) a bit of a break. I am working on all the Power Point slides that I’ll need for tomorrow and yes, I’ll be up late tonight putting it all together!

The down side of my new job is that I had about a 50 hour week this week and ran a bit shorter on prep time than I would really like. The upside is that I now have a laptop that I can use on Sunday for Power Point presentations – Woo Hoo! This is going to be soooooo much better than luggin my desktop back and forth to church!

Weekend Report 2007/06/18

June 18, 2007

Happy Father’s Day!

We had a great service this weekend.  A lot of energy, especially during worship, which really excites me!

Our Power Point was, “God is a Father who never fails!”. We talked about how Dad’s aren’t always perfect… but God is! Our Scripture Memory Verse was, “Don’t be afraid, because God is with you. He will never leave or forget you! – Dude-A-Ronomy 31:6″.

It’s great to see the kids falling into the swing of things, knowing what to expect and participating. We will also be enhancing the KidZone staff in the coming weeks, once we are able to get some administrative stuff and training taken care of… that and our backordered curriculum!

Oh yeah, and thanks again to Raina LeGrand for her artwork contributions to KidZone! Ask the kids why Albert was not looking to happy while waiting to see his favorite christian band, “Griddle”. I guess you could say waiting on his father was a little “sickening”.

Albert waits for his Dad to arrive, but he never shows...

Ahhh… The saga continues! Stay tuned for next week!

Weekend Report 2007/06/10

June 13, 2007

Man – A bit late on this post to say the least! Patti and I had her parents in from New York last week, my parents arrived yesterday, I’m still looking for a job, the transmission in our van died, temp jobs, four kids, writing curriculum… ! Aaargh, how do we do it?! I guess it’s only by the grace of God, ’cause I’ve gotta tell you this is bigger than I am!

OK, enough of my whining and on to Sunday’s report!

In case you didn’t know, we do use competition as a tool to help keep order and interest during the service. Kids get individual prizes (like candy or Kid Bux) and teams get points – the winning team will get a prize at the end of the service. They are awarded prizes/points for various things, like participating enthusiastically, leading in prayer, following our W.I.N.S. Rules as well as other things.

By the way,  W.I.N.S. is as follows:

Whistle means quiet
Interrupting is un-cool
No un-kind behavior
Stay in your seat

Attendance was up again! I think we may very well be dealing with a number of kids who are with Mommy this weekend and Daddy the next. That coupled with vacations… but again, did I mention attendance was up!

So was the enthusiasm! When I ask the kids if they like what is happening in KidZone, the overwhelming response is that they LOVE IT! And we love that they love it!

Our Power Point, which is the main thing we try to convey to the kids was, “I Can Serve God Now!”. They don’t have to wait until they are 21 to serve! And serving God can be done in so many ways… it can include helping your parents, helping out at school or at church! Many of our kids help each week by tearing down the classroom with us and many kids also help Saturday night, laying carpet & setting up chairs for the adult services!

Kids can also serve God with their money. We continued to build on Pastor Joe’s lesson from last week with the “M&Ms” (Money Management). Kids learn that money is an important part of life and that giving is a way that they can also serve God now! Parents, we do collect an offering during our service, as we want to get the kids used to participating in this act of worship while they are still young. Please help them to do so by giving them a chore to earn a little money to manage – or perhaps talk with them about funds they may receive as an allowance or gift money and remember, they can’t manage what they don’t have!

I was really excited to be able to share some new worship material with the kids. We just ordered and received two CD’s that Patti and I have used in the past and they are EXCELLENT! In fact, I was asked to duck out to the adult service to sing on a song with Matthew and the worship team. When I got back, I found the room rocking full tilt, with voices and motions! We taught them the song “Everyday” by Joel Houston. I’ve gotta tell ya… I think in a few weeks the kids could get up on the adult platform and lead a song during worship… That would be awesome! If only word were to get to our Worship Pastor… Hmm… I wonder if he reads this blog?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Our Scripture Memory Verse was, “You’d be a fool not to see that faith without action is useless! – James 2:20″. I actually taught this lesson and wound up scrapping what I had planned on the spot and instead talked about BIG STRONG DEAD PEOPLE! What?! You see a body that is big and strong (faith) is totally useless if that person is dead (works)! But a big strong person, full of life can be very useful and productive – even changing the world! That’s what we need to do!

By the way parents, please check this blog every week, because I will post the memory verse and power point. The kids also get them each week on a business card… although this week they were hand written since my printer died! But again, you can always come here to get it – and please do. There’s only so much teaching that can be done in an hour on a Sunday… YOU need to be involved in your child’s spiritual development. We want to partner with you and give you some tools to help, like our Scripture Memory Verse and Power Point!

As excited as I was to report last week that we had curriculum on order, as I alluded to earlier in this post, it ain’t here yet! So, I had to write another lesson for this past Sunday. And it looks like I’ll be writing tomorrow for this weekend as well (in a way, I’m glad I don’t have a job right now, ’cause this stuff would never get done otherwise!). I am looking forward to the new material arriving, because I’ve been up until about 3AM each week putting on the final touches on stories, artwork and multi-media (yeah, a youth pastor does what the entire adult staff has to do… and does it with a smile. Although it may be partly out of delirium!).

Anyway, my teenage daughter Raina again contributed artwork to our “Today’s Life Story”, which gave us a look into Kelly’s brother Albert’s life (see picture)

Kelly Phones Her Brother Albert

Albert was so impressed with his little sister aiding in two salvations the week before that felt challenged and decided to seek ways that he could serve God NOW! He helped out Mr. Gleek at school; he helped his parents at home, even though they didn’t notice, each parent assuming it was the other that had helped out around the house. And, of course, Albert helped out at church! He was always a part of the set-up team, since their church met at a school and in particular, he helped out with the audio. When the bass player fell off the stage and broke his arm, Albert, being recognized as someone who was always serving, was given an opportunity to serve by playing the bass during the adult service – quite an honor for a teen!

Hey, you know what else would be an honor? It would be an honor to have you serve with us! For anyone interested, we are looking to build a team of teachers to help out in all the children’s areas, including KidZone. If you would like to learn more, please get with me!

As for this coming week… Who knows what will happen with Kelly or Albert or maybe there is another character waiting to be revealed? Maybe even Mr. Geek… uh, I mean, Mr. Gleek will make another appearance…

Mr. Geek... I mean Mr. Gleek!

You’ll just have to check back to see!

Weekend Report 2007/06/03

June 4, 2007

We launched our UpRising Youth meeting on Saturday, so I did not do a stitch of setup for the K-6 group in KidZone on Saturday night. So, on Sunday I got up at like 05:30AM and used my morning to get setup for service.

We are still waiting for our new curriculum to arrive. Patti and I wrote the lesson we taught this weekend and my daughter Raina and I collaborated on the artwork (see sample below). Our POWER POINT was Jesus sent us to go and tell them and our MEMORY VERSE was Jesus said to the followers, “Go everywhere in the world. Tell the Good News to everyone” – Mark 16:15. Make sure your kids learn these for next week and be sure to ask them about what they learned. We need to make sure that the kids are actually learning from week to week. That’s why we do review questions! In fact, we will be doing what we call a “Funday Sunday” every six weeks or so, in which we review all the material that was covered in the previous weeks!

Artwork by Ray & Raina LeGrand

Attendence was light… I know there are several kids on vacation and a few that switch off every other week to be with a parent they don’t live with. But it was still a great service! The kids had fun (see our “mummy game” pictures below) and learned! How do I know? I ask them! Almost all the kids remembered our POWER POINT from the previous week as well as other key points! Pastor Joe even popped in to see what we are doing!

We would love to get some feedback from parents so we can help guage how the ministry is progressing. Yes we want smiling faces, but we need to know if we are being effective! Please feel free to leave a comment here or send an email to ray@uprisingchurch.org

The Big Kid

June 1, 2007

I’m no stranger to the concept of “the blog”. In fact, I have been an active blogger since April 15th of 2005. I started out on blogger.com and am a regular poster on MySpace.com and have now thrown my hat into the WordPress ring as a part of UpRising Church. My blogger.com site is defunct at this point and I will continue my MySpace.com postings as a means of personal expression. I will also be developing an “UpRising Youth” MySpace site in the not too distant future, so this blog will tend to focus more on the kids 12 and under. Of course though it will serve in a general sense as a means for chronicling the overall happenings of the children’s and youth ministry at UpRising Church.

That said, let me introduce you to “The Big Kid”. That would be me…

Many people mistake me as someone several years more youthful than I actually am. I don’t know how this happened. I started out life by hanging out with the big kids as much as I could and eventually became one. Somewhere along the line though, I started being more and more drawn to people that were younger than myself and well… I have become a bit of a perpetual kid! Pastor Joe Case mentioned his observation of this during a UC Youth event we had a little while ago at The Strike & Spare bowling and recreation center. I was having as much fun as the kids (if not more!) on the bumper cars, the roller rink, laser tag, etc… The kids wanted me on their teams too!

And you know what, that’s what I want. I want to be on the same team with the youth! I want them to be comfortable enough around me to share their lives. Their highs and lows. I want them to know me as “Ray” but to recognize that there is something different about this big kid… oh yeah! He’s the Youth Pastor!

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that my wife Patti. She is my partner in this endevour. She is extremely creative and caring and does so much for the kids and the church. I am proud just be be able to serve alongside her. Even if she occasionly thinks I am a bit of a big kid and in need of a time out!

Anyway, please check back for thoughts, updates, reports and news of upcoming children’s & youth events at UpRising Church!

Coming on June 3rd

June 1, 2007

We have gotten permission and have ordered new curriculum to serve UpRising’s Kids from kindergarten through 6th grade! Patti and I are excited about this, because it is material that we have worked with for many years and will free us up to be very expressive and creative in teaching the kids. Also, it will be musch easier for us to disseminate the lesson to our developing teams!

But, it’s not here yet…

So, this week, we are teaching from a lesson that Patti and I wrote, which focuses on, “The Great Commission“… telling all the world about Jesus… Even people we don’t particularly like!

Our Power Point will be : “Jesus Sent Us To Go & Tell Them”

The Memory Verse will be : Jesus said to the followers, “Go everywhere in the world. Tell the Good News to everyone.” – Mark 16:15

Make sure the kids remember to bring their cards from last week and that they know their Power Point and Memory Verse!

C’ya Sunday!

Grand Re-Opening!

June 1, 2007

Preparation for our first Sunday in The Kid Zone at UpRising Church was a bit of a fiasco…

Patti and I are used to a curriculum that is quite different from what Pastor Jim had been using. We have made a recommendation based on our experience and have also looked at materials suggested by similar churches. The problem was that a decision had not yet been made and that left us with teaching from a sample lesson with no multi-media. I had to create all the multi-media stuff instead of using what would have been provided, if we owned the material. This, combined with creating flyers for our UpRising Youth “Hang Out Night” events which will be taking place this summer, starting June 2nd for our 13 to 17 year olds. Unfortunately the files I was working with were in the 900MB range and our computer slowed to a crawl… I had to keep re-booting and let’s just say that two hours worth of work wound up stretching further… much further. I didn’t wrap up until 4AM Sunday morning!

Needless to say, I was a bit tired on Sunday. Presenting a high energy service can be tough… Unless you have coffee! I drank very much coffee… very very much!

We had 16 kids for our first service and it went very well. In fact, there was one family that expressed some reservations about their kids, but as they walked down the hallway to where we moved the class too this week and heard the energy, the parents remarked that their kids just might like it…. The kids ran through the door and began participating immediately! After the service, that same family remarked how much they loved the kid’s service!

Our main point was “I am designed by God!”. We talked about creation and the fact that we are all unique. We also talked about the fact that we were made to last forever. We took time to pray with the kids about where they would spend their eternity. This is why we do what we do!

We went home, made fresh salsa and quesadillas for lunch. Needless to say, after lunch, I crashed out hard, taking a 3 hour nap!

We look forward with great anticipation to what the future holds for this vital ministry. Please pray for Patti and I, that we will be able to develop a caring and dedicated team to serve all the kids at UpRising Church!
